MANILA, Philippines—Today (Tuesday) has been a heavy day for me—emotionally. Over the weekend I was at Puerto Princesa—elated with the progress at our ecotourism sites… elated with the spirit that bloomed out of my meetings with Gerry (Ortega), Marlon (Tamsi) and Jett (Millare)—and my own staff in Manila: Monchet (Olives), Jo (Saw), Emong (Chavez), Faizza (Panggol), Arvin (Vicente)… We ended the meeting by singing “The Impossible Dream.” … The Dream was a country wherein our natural resources would be protected and nurtured.
The strategy was to develop in Puerto Princesa a brand of tourism wherein it is the community that benefits. They are not just hired—they own it. We work with them to up their skills. Gerry’s motto was “Kung walang pakinabang, walang pakialam.”
