ATM Letter to PCSD and Gov. Mitra

In behalf of Alyansa Tigil Mina, National Coordinator Jaybee Garganera sent a letter to Gov. Abraham Mitra of Palawan and Mearl Hilario of the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development, saying:

"In this context, we urgently request your honorable council, the PCSD to not issue the SEP clearance for MAC and INC.  The PCSD is tasked in ascertaining the social acceptability of development projects in the province.  The people have documented and publicly rejected the projects of MAC and INC.  It is the solemn duty of PCSD to uphold the true will of the people and in this case, the non-isusance an SEP clearance is the just and righteous and honorable decision that the council must take."

CRUCIAL DAYS FOR PALAWAN “UNESCO MAN & BIOSPHERE RESERVE” BEFORE NEWLY ELECTED GOVERNMENT TAKES OVER

The so-called anti-mining “karaban rally” composed of about 600 protesters from farmers and indigenous communities reached Palawan capital city (the Philippines) on the 7th of June.

The main scope of the peaceful effort was to request the Provincial Government not to endorse the proposed plans of MacroAsia and Ipilan Nickel Corporation (INC), and to clarify matters on the Canadian-based MBMI mining company’s newly approved Financial and Technical Assistance Agreement (FTAA) application. June 22 is the last official session of the Provincial Government of Palawan before the new elected administration takes over.

On the 25th, also the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development (PCSD) will have its last section. Indigenous peoples, farmers and NGOs fear that these government agencies might endorse both MacroAsia and Ipilan Nickel Corporation before their mandates end. As result anti-mining efforts are being intensified and the international advocacy community is being alerted.
