ATM and CBCP-NASSA Letter to PNoy re Mindoro Nickel Project_NCP Final Statement_12.7.2011
December 7, 2011
President Benigno C. Aquino, III
Office of the President
Republic of the Philippines
Dear Mr. President:
We would like to furnish you a copy of the Final Statement of the Norwegian National Contact Point (NCP) on a complaint filed against Intex Resources Inc, a Norwegian mining company not recognized in their home country, that currently owns and manages the Mindoro Nickel Project located Occidental and Oriental Mindoro.
The Final Statement provides that Intex Resources Inc has indeed violated indigenous peoples rights when they did not consult and disclose project information to all affected communities there. It also alleges the lack of proper procedure in land delineation and financial concerns. The complaint filed in January 2009 emphasized that Intex Resources Inc has violated several provisions of the guidelines for multi-national enterprises established under the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and was confirmed by their NCP in November 30 this year.
In this light, we would like to request for your good office to intervene and recognize the impacts of the mining project in Mindoro and the findings of the Norwegian NCP. We recommend that the Minerals Production Sharing Agreements and Environmental Compliance Certificate covering the Mindoro Nickel Project be revoked immediately.
Also attached is a Press Release by the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines’ National Secretariat for Social Action (CBCP-NASSA) last December 5.
Thank you.
Respectfully,
Sgd.
