Video Documentary: Ginto a la Pobre on I-Witness
Airing on July 6, 2009
Monday late night after Saksi (GMA 7)
Everyday, the miners of Aroroy, Masbate endure up to 48 hours of non-stop work just to find the one treasure that will keep their families alive… gold.
They go through endless stretches of caves and hammer continuously on huge boulders to recover gold nuggets buried inside the rocks.
From the mining sites, these nuggets are immediately processed and then sent to refineries and jewelers where they’re transformed into expensive and beautiful jewelries. This arduous yet lucrative cycle of gold production is what sustains the lives of the residents of Aroroy, Masbate for so many years.
At the young age of 13, Henry has already joined his father and older brother in looking for the prized element. With their combined income, they are able to feed the rest of their family. Meanwhile, 20-year old Jerry’s main concern is to look after his loved ones through mining. But his dream of lifting his parents out of poverty was suddenly cut short when he was heavily injured last year while planting explosives at the mine.
Award-winning journalist Sandra Aguinaldo follows the gold trail and documents the lives of the people who depend on this precious metal in the documentary “Poor Man’s Gold," airing on I-Witness this Monday midnight after the late night newscast Saksi.
