Quezon City, Philippines – Three Filipino tribal leaders are presently in Geneva, Switzerland participating in the United Nation’s Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (UNCERD) hearing on a complaint filed by the Subanon community against the Philippine Government.

Benguet discloses default claims by PNB clients

Benguet president Benjamin Philip Romualdez reported a consolidated net loss of P89 million in the first quarter compared with a net loss of P85 million a year ago. Operating revenue fell to P32.4 million from P41.1 million due to lower sales of chromite.

Areas in mining town declared danger-zone

Philippines: Over 18,000 girls and boys engaged in mining


A Survey on Children conducted by the National Statistics Office of the Philippines in 2001 revealed a total of 4 million working children aged 5-17 years in the Philippines, of which 2.4 million were in dangerous work. Over 18,000 children are engaged in mining and quarrying. Half of them are 10 to 14 years old.

Filipino activists to hold forum on mining, human rights

The Students of Sustainability 2009 (SoS'09) is hosting a forum on the widespread mining in the Philippines by multinational mining companies, and the impacts on communities and the environment at Monash University (Room H1), Melbourne, Victoria on 09 July 2009 at 2.15pm.

The forum will feature Philippine activists Myke Magalang and Rodne Galicha, who are both well versed in the issues of mining and have used local, national and international forums to get justice for the wrongs inflicted by mining.

Fact-finding body confirms illegal mining, illegal road construction inside Butuan Watershed Area

The government and civilian organizations (CO) fact finding team found positive allegations of illegal operations inside the restricted Butuan City Watershed areas. The team visited the site and investigated alleged illegal mining, illegal cutting of trees and illegal construction of road inside the 4,367.44-hectare government-declared watershed.
