Sibuyan residents block mining truck pushing through barricades

Press Statement | February 1, 2022

Sibuyan residents succeeded in blocking a truck that tried to push its way through the barricades as they stood firm in demanding the suspension of the operations of Altai Philippines Mining Company.

Elizabeth Ibanez, Coordinator of Sibuyanons Against Mining (SAM), said they were surprised that the mining company attempted to force their way through the barricades. "We are also aghast that the police were helping the truck that was transporting nickel ore. We explained to the police last night that we are protesting the illegal operations of Altai Mining Company since they do not have the necessary permits for their activities. Why then is the police taking the side of the mining company?

Rodne Galicha, Executive -Director of Laudatu Si that "the people will continue to stand their ground and prevent the trucks from passing through. We will continue our barricade because the mining company has no permits and social license."

Meanwhile, Alyansa Tigil Coordinator Jaybee Garganera condemned the acts of the mining company and the police.

"We are in solidarity with the residents of Sibuyan and fully support their fight for the preservation of their island," he added.
