Alyansa Tigil Mina joins the call for accountability for massive corruption in flood control projects as well as the destruction brought about by large-scale mining, which have caused and worsened flooding in many communities.
We demand the following: 1) full accountability of people responsible with the corruption, including arrest and jail even for political elites and dynasties; 2) return of money and full payment of taxes;3) full transparency including public disclosures, in the investigation of ICI, Blue Ribbon Committee and other investigating agencies.
ATM’s 2024 study on beneficial ownership of mining companies has revealed that the Romualdez family has significant stakes or strong links in some mining firms, including Benguet Corporation, Marcventures Mining and Development Corporation (MMDC) and Brightgreen Resources Corporation (BRC). The Romualdezes, among other politicians with links to mining, such as the Villars and Gatchalians, must answer for their culpability.
Amidst the controversy over flood control projects, we stress that mining has caused flooding in several mining sites. Mining and floods as well as corruption and budget scandals are overlapping injustices that need to be urgently stopped.
As members of the R2KRNow coalition, we support the calls for broader and deeper reforms on full transparency in our governance systems, as well as the immediate enactment of FOI law.
We also commit ourselves to increase our capacities to monitor and participate in transparency and accountability mechanisms in national and local governments, including and specifically on transparency in Extractives industry, thur EITI and PWYP-Philippines or Bantay Kita.
We remain committed to the growing movement against corruption, particularly involving flood control projects and large-scale mining. We will persist until justice is served.
