Acquittal of Envi Activist of Libel Case Lauded

Alyansa Tigil Mina welcomes the decision of the Regional Trial Court, Branch 58, Makati City acquitting environmental activist Marilou Verano of libel, a charge filed by private complainant Filminera Resources Corporation.

We congratulate Ms. Verano, member of ATM’s Council of Leaders (COL), and Atty Fritzielyn Palmiery of Tanggol Kalikasan for their courage and perseverance. The Court’s decision should serve as a warning to mining firms that environmental defenders will not back down from any legal harassment suit by abusive companies.

We regard the acquittal of Ms. Verano as an encouraging signal to all environmental and human rights activists to persist in telling the truth and exposing the malpractices of mining companies and the ill effects of mining activities to the environment and the communities.
