Alyansa Tigil Mina (ATM) stands in solidarity with community leaders, and members of Homonhon Environmental Advocates and Rights Defenders (HEARD), who are currently fighting an injunction filed by EMIR Mineral Resources Corporation.
We strongly condemn this Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation by the mining company against Carmi G. Macapagao, Dioniosio Bandoy, Jeremy Padilla, Nelson Badenas, Ruben Badeo, Kerrilyn Rose Hombria, and other unnamed individuals.
We see this legal action as an attempt to cow into silence the community leaders for their vocal and unrelenting resistance against the destruction of their island’s natural resources, particularly their fresh water sources. This legal intimidation by the mining company illustrates EMIR’s total disregard for the residents’ freedom of expression and their right to a safe and healthy environment.
We fully support HEARD and all Homonhon residents bravely confronting the abuses and lapses of mining companies as they protect their ecosystems and way of life.
We call on the public to support Homonhon’s human rights and environmental defenders in their fight against destructive mining. Let us work together to protect the valuable and historical island of Homonhon.
