Alyansa Tigil Mina (ATM) strongly condemns the illegal arrest of human rights defender, Edel Parducho, and youth activist, Three Odeña during the People Power at 40 March Rally yesterday.
According to reports, Edel was serving as a marshal in the rally and was shielding the demonstrators, mostly women, from being pushed by the police. Three was taking photos when she was suddenly pulled by her hair and arrested.
Charges of physical injury were then filed against the two activists despite video documentation and eyewitness accounts pointing to the contrary. Clearly, these are fabricated charges meant to intimidate and harass protesters peacefully exercising their right to assembly and freedom of expression.
It is especially abhorrent that these violations of fundamental rights occurred during the EDSA People Power Anniversary, when democratic rights and freedoms should have been absolutely respected and upheld.
We join the calls for the immediate release of the two detainees and the dropping of fabricated charges. Further, we demand that the government investigate these intolerable acts of harassment and hold the perpetrators accountable.
