On this International Human Rights Day, Alyansa Tigil Mina (ATM) stands in solidarity with human rights groups and the Filipino people in demanding full accountability for the massive corruption of public funds by political dynasties in collusion with private corporations.
Particular to the mining sector, we condemn erring officials from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) conniving with political dynasties that have beneficial ownership of mining companies.
Despite the environmental destruction and human rights violations in local communities, large-scale mining is aggressively being pushed by political dynasties with strong ties to mining companies. Several of them are also implicated in the flood control corruption. Yet, the DENR continues to allow their mining operations, even when communities strongly object to these projects.
Mining is the culprit behind severe flooding, but government officials steal from the nation’s coffers and deprive the people with reliable infrastructures. Mining has exacerbated the impacts of climate change disasters, but companies continue to profit from mining operations.
This injustice must stop. We call on the public to persist in holding the corrupt accountable.
Ang mga makapangyarihang dinastiya, ang mga dambuhalang minero at mga kurakot sa DENR, ay dapat panagutin. Ang mga kurakot, dapat managot!
