Alyansa Tigil Mina (ATM) lauded the House Resolution 413 filed by Cong. Leila De Lima directing an investigation into the alleged illegal mining by Woggle Corporation in Dupax del Norte and the possible cancellation of their exploration permit.
Jaybee Garganera, ATM National Coordinator, said “This is welcome news, especially for the residents of the area, who have set-up a barricade to express their resistance to the mining exploration. This investigation would hopefully shed light on the violations of the mining firm, hold them accountable, and result in the revocation of their permit.”
ATM also hit the Department of Natural Resources (DENR) for granting the permit without complying with the requirements of the country’s laws, foremost of which is holding public consultations and securing the Free Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) of indigenous communities.
“This is ultimately an act of betrayal and gross violation of the DENR’s mandate. The House should seriously look into DENR’s wrongdoing in granting Woggle’s exploration permit , then make the culpable officials accountable.”
ATM has been extending its support to the residents of Dupax del Norte who have protesting the lack of prior consultations, the cutting of trees and trespassing into private and agricultural lands.
