ATM Statement of Support to Opposition Against Mining in Didipio

Alyansa Tigil Mina lauds the strong environmental stance of the local government of Brgy. Didipio, Kasibu, Nueva Vizcaya, which passed last June 3, 2022 Sangguniang Barangay Resolution No. 38 Series of 2022 entitled: “A Resolution Expressing Opposition on the Extension of the Oceanagold (Philippines) Inc. Due to Lack of Consultation by the Proponent.”
ATM likewise expressed its full support to DESAMA and BILEG, both people’s organizations in Brgy. Didipio for their firm opposition against the illegal operations of OGPI in their barangay.
“The local community, especially the women, bear the brunt of the negative impacts of mining in the area,” said Myrna Duyan, BILEG Chair.
Already, residents suffer from all kinds of pollution – from noise, air to water pollution. The area’s soil has also severely weakened such that the community is highly vulnerable to soil erosion, landslide and flooding, especially during typhoons.
ATM called on President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. and Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Toni Yulo-Loyzaga to heed the voice of the community. It demanded that the position of the local community be respected by OGPI and concerned national agencies.
Eduardo Ananayo, DESAMA Chair said “government must immediately put a stop to mining operations in Didipio”.
