On this International Women’s Day, Alyansa Tigil Mina honors all women, especially those leading the resistance against large-scale mining in the communities. We salute women environmental and human rights defenders courageously standing at barricades, actively driving awareness sessions, and steadfastly organizing communities.
Being the primary caregivers in the family, women carry the responsibility of managing the health issues and financial burdens caused by mining. Being providers and nurturers in the community, women play multiple roles as they tend to the soil, manage water resources, and watch over farmlands and forests. They suffer most from the impacts of mining, such as loss of biodiversity, deforestation, soil erosion, and various forms of pollution. No wonder women are on the frontlines in the fight for environmental protection and community rights.
While defending lands and rights, women put their lives and security at risk. When they raise their voices against injustice and join creative and protest actions, they become easy targets of red-tagging, harassment, and Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPP) suits, among other human rights violations.
Despite constant threats and intimidation from state agents and mining corporations, these women endure, demonstrating unwavering resolve and dedication.
We call on the government to protect and uphold women’s rights at all times. We demand that perpetrators of abuses and discrimination against women be held accountable. Finally, we urge our government leaders to act on the demands of women in the communities – Stop destructive mining operations and prioritize food, land, water, and the right to a safe and healthy environment!
We extend our solidarity to all women who fight for gender equity and women's empowerment. Let us celebrate the victories and advances resulting from women’s glorious and unrelenting struggles.
Mabuhay ang Kababaihan!
