ATM Press Statement | May 4, 2023
Anti-mining groups firm up resolve to continue opposing the operations of Altai Philippines Mining Corporation on the 100th day of the barricades in Sibuyan Island, Romblon.
Elizabeth Ibañez, Coordinator of Sibuyanons Against Mining (SAM), said: “Ipagpapatuloy namin ang pagpapaalab ng pagkakaisa para sa pakikibaka upang makamit ang hangad na maipamana ang Sibuyan at mailigtas sa mapangwasak na pagmimina.” (We will continue strengthening the unities in our struggle so that we achieve our aspiration to leave as legacy Sibuyan Island and to keep it safe from destructive mining.”)
Meanwhile, Rodne Galicha, Executive-Director of Living Laudato Si, said: “Today marks the 100th day of the barricade camp in Sibuyan Island against the exploration activities of AMPC. This proves the sustained vigilance and commitment of the people to protect their fragile ecosystems and unique biodiversity. We commend the local officials of Barangay España for standing up together with environmental defenders. The barricade camp is a testament of the strong opposition of Sibuyanons against mining.”
Jaybee Garganera, ATM National Coordinator lauded the Sibuyan residents for their “unwavering resistance against large-scale mining.” He echoed the demands of the Sibuyanons and called on the DENR to cancel the Mineral Production Sharing Agreement (MPSA) of APMC.
