ATM honors women rights defenders leading the struggle against mining
Press Statement | Alyansa Tigil Mina (ATM) | March 8, 2022
Alyansa Tigil Mina (ATM) extends its solidarity with all women on this International Women’s Day. We particularly recognize the crucial role of women environmental human rights defenders in leading the fight against destructive mining.
We express our appreciation to the ATM Women and Mining Working Group, composed of women leaders from the communities and support groups, who work tirelessly to advance the causes of women and mining-affected communities.
It is undeniable that among women’s critical role in the environment is managing natural resources at the family and community level. Women manage water, maintain farmlands, look after sources of fuel and food, and care for forests and agricultural terrain. Yet, they are also the most affected by environmental degradation and destructive mining activities.
Despite these challenges, women have been at the forefront of anti-mining advocacies since ATM’s conception as they oppose the destruction of natural resources, as well as their community life. They courageously speak of the impacts of mining, demand justice, and represent the interests of their communities. They risk their security and safety at the hands of an oppressive government that violates the human rights of environmental defenders. They continue to fight despite the threats, abuses and violations, even the killing of women environmental human rights defenders. And we celebrate this courage today!
We celebrate and we respect each and everyone’s contributions to our common cause. It is no question that without the strength of women environmental human rights defenders in our midst, ATM will not be as vibrant as it is today. Pasasalamat at Pagpupugay sa mga kababaihang tumitindig para sa mamamayan at kalikasan! Padayon!
